THE CLIMAX OF THE ATTACKS ON THE DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT- SENATOR(PROF) IKE EKWEREMADU.
On behalf of the Igbo community as well all other well meaning Nigerians in South Africa, I totally condemn the latest assassination attempt on the Nigerian Deputy Senate President- Senator( Prof) Ike Ekweremadu. I recall that this is the second attempt on his life.
According to an Igbo adage, a tree strategically positioned by the road side bears the brunt of machete blows from wayfarers. Regrettably, this saying is currently manifest on the person of Senator Ekweremadu as some forces have shown unhidden desperation to take him out.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, together with a few other lawmakers, have stood strongly for equity and fairness to all Nigerians of all tribes, sections or religion. Ekweremadu has staunchly defended the rights to life and existence of communities across Nigeria, who have suffered widespread loss of lives and property. He has spoken up in Senate plenaries, sponsored motions, and a bill on state police aimed at enhancing security in the country.
I hereby call on the Nigerian security operatives to swing into action to root out all those behind the attacks and threats to othe life of Sen. Ekweremadu and his family.
The state must do all that it can to protect the lives of every Nigerian, including people like Senator Ekweremadu, who are courageous and vocal in defence of our democratic values and principles.
This is very critical, especially in the build up to next year's elections to avoid destabilizing and overheating the polity.
